New Books

Lithophanes
by Margaret Carney

cmoct08newbook_carney.jpgFeaturing a wealth of photographs, this is the first book devoted to the popular 19th century European art form known as lithophanes. Porcelain three-dimensional pictures, lithophanes can only be seen when backlit and appear as images painted in grisaille. Popular in the late Victorian era, lithophanes were used to enhance tea warmers, plaques, vases, night lights, lampshades, table screens, fireplace screens, fans, window panels, miniatures, steins, cups, mugs, plates, matchboxes and candle shields.

Carney’s comprehensive survey of lithophanes covers everything from the inspiration for the lithophanes themselves, to imagery, production history and manufacturing techniques. Lithophanes also includes a history of the Blair Museum of Lithophanes, which houses the largest collection of lithophanes (and of which Carney is the curator), and a chapter devoted to contemporary ceramics artists working with lithophanes.
