The Month in Clay

It's that time of year again. Here in the Midwest, these last few weeks of winter are brutal. Sometimes I find myself doubting that spring will ever arrive. So what better way to counteract the winter doldrums than get out and see what’s happening in clay in the month of March? To make things easier for you, we thought we'd highlight a few great exhibitions and events that will help cure those winter blues.
If you can't make it to any of the events featured below, be sure to check out the Ceramics Monthly Calendar, a new feature on www.ceramicartsdaily.org, for a more comprehensive listing of exhibitions, conferences, fairs and workshops in your neck of the woods.
In a couple of weeks, we’ll be heading to the annual National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts conference (
www.nceca.net). This year, the conference takes place March 19-22 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. If you plan to attend be sure to visit us at booth 500, where we'll be handing out free copies of Ceramics Monthly and Pottery Making Illustrated, and free posters. We'll also have our books available for sale at a special show rate, along with great t-shirts and other clay-friendly goodies.

In conjunction with NCECA, "The Greatest Show on Earth," a themed exhibition about the circus and the carnival, will be on view March 17-22 at the Three Rivers Arts Festival Gallery (
www.artsfestival.net) in Pittsburgh. The show will feature a wide range of functional, sculptural and installation ceramic works by emerging and nationally recognized artists.

"Exquisite Pots: Six Degrees of Collaboration" is on view through April 28 at the Northern Clay Center (
www.northernclaycenter.org) in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The exhibition includes collaborative works by Margaret Bohls, Andy Brayman, Sam Chung and Deborah Schwartzkopf, as well as co-curators Maren Kloppmann and Andrew Martin.

"Watershed Winter Residents 2007-2008," an annual exhibition featuring new works by recent resident artists at Watershed Center for Ceramic Art (
www.watershedceramics.org) in Newcastle, Maine, will be on view March 1-22 at the Clay Art Center (
www.clayartcenter.org) in Port Chester, New York.

“Eden Revisited: The Ceramic Art of Kurt Weiser,” a mid-career retrospective of the Tempe, Arizona, ceramic artist and painter, is on view through April 19 at the Bellevue Art Museum (
www.bellevuearts.org) in Bellevue, Washington.

“Crossing Boundaries: Painting and Ceramics,” an exhibition of work by seven artists who work interchangeably in two and three dimensions, will be on display March 1-24 at Lacoste Gallery (
www.lacostegallery.com) in Concord, Massachusetts. Featured artists include Sandy Brown, Bede Clarke, Bruno LaVerdiere, Jim Leedy, Jeff Shapiro, Tsujumura Shiro and Tom Spleth.
Bede Clarke's ceramic work (shown above) as well as his paintings and charcoal drawings will be included in Crossing Boundaries.
